Introduction

emassengill.com, One Man's Family, is mainly about me, my ancestors, and my descendants. But there is much more to the story: An American yangban (scholar) and a Korean seamstress from half a world away find true happiness together. That part of the story is unfolding on two other websites.

hakkun.com, Living Hakkun's Dream, is the story of first 38 years of the seamstress (Soon E) in Korea and how she came to be in America.

imsoone.com, A Korean Woman in America, recounts Soon E's sometimes frustrating and often amusing attempts to make a new life in a culture nothing like the only one she knew for the first four decades of her life.

I took this picture on April 22, 2002 at the entrance to the birthplace of Lady Shin Saimdang (1504-51) on the eastern shore of Korea. She became the most outstanding woman artist in Korea with her brilliant paintings and poetry.
